Mediterranean sea and sky
Azules y Blancos (Blues and Whites) was a captivating exhibition showcasing 30 new paintings by renowned Spanish figurative artist, José Royo. The exhibition opened on June 17, 2010, highlighting Royo's deep dedication to his signature subject: the female form, a theme he has passionately explored for over 30 years of his 50-year career.
Known for his plein air technique, Royo's paintings are infused with the vibrant blues of the Mediterranean sea and sky. These radiant backdrops serve as a canvas for his masterful contrasts, where Royo skillfully incorporates an extraordinary variety of white tones. As Royo describes, his whites are “composed of a thousand whites,” enhanced by swift, concise brushstrokes that bring out shadow and light. His innovative use of paint as both color and texture adds a dynamic, expressionist quality to his work.
Based in Valencia, José Royo has been an obsessive painter since the age of seven. He refined his craft at the prestigious Royal Academy of San Carlos and has enjoyed a distinguished career spanning five decades. Royo's artwork has been exhibited internationally in Spain, Europe, Japan, and the United States, and he has participated in major art fairs worldwide. His notable commissions include portraits for Spain’s High Ministry of Justice and the Spanish Royal Family, including King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia. In 2009, Royo was honored with the prestigious Rotary Personality of the Year Award..
